Patna gearing up towards new sign-making standards

The nature of signage markets from one region to another is varied and specified by certain factors, which largely involve both geography and demography. Patna being the latest region captured on the radar of SIGN & GRAPHICS, a brief navigation over this flamboyant capital city of Bihar digs up some unique characteristics that can be found in the form of some common attributes among state capitals. JYANESWAR LAISHRAM mingles with a select horde of signage players, a mixed bag of big and small firms, whose works and dedications throw some light on the latest trend and tradition of signage surging in and around the capital city.

Ambica Traders
Gearing up for sun-board manufacturing plant

PC Shrivastav with S Goswami
What Ambica Traders is known for? Material supply! Yes, but this is not the complete answer. This Patnaheadquartered signage mogul is now segregated its activities 50:50 in material supply and printing. “After decades of experience in the industry, we finally decided to bring whole gamut of activities under our roof. So, we are expanding towards new verticals,” puts in PC Shrivastav, managing director, Ambica Traders. This Rs 24 crore signage major has branches in Ranchi, Raipur and Nagpur, covering the northern and western regions in both aspects of material supply and printing.

Production facility of Ambica Traders in Patna is equipped with a comprehensive portfolio of high-end printers viz. EFI VUTEk, HP 4500, Jeti, Mutoh, AXYZ CNC router, laser engravers and a line of finishing equipments. Collectively, more than 20 machines are installed in the company’s four different branches. All major telecom companies (except Aircel) are in the client list of Ambica Traders and a number of landmark projects have been completed across Bihar, Jharkhand and neighbouring regions. A team of 65 interchangeable professionals in all four branches of the company handles everything to the fullest satisfactory level of customers.

LED displays are very much an imperative part of Ambica Traders’ job profile. The company has accomplished a number of glow-sign projects around Bihar. “Remarkable among the projects we have done so far was the making of an LED-board of 20x10 ft for the Public Relations Department, Government of Bihar. The whole project, which included fabrication and installation tasks, was completed in 20 days and we received applause from different directions,” mentions PC Shrivastav. He adds, “Challenge was not only the deadline but the quality we delivered to the utmost satisfaction of customers.”

In addition to all, Ambica Traders is still slotting in its material supply tradition in which PSPs around Bihar are satisfactorily supplied brands of their choices. SRF, Pioneer, Starflex, among other brands, are some of the popular printing materials procured currently in the company’s stockrooms. Materials with a total of around 6-8 containers are supplied all around every month. Ambica Traders is also a 3M convertor. The company’s big plan in pipeline is opening of a ‘sun-board manufacturing plant’ to be situated in Ranchi. This mega move of the company, according to PC Shrivastav, is Ambica Traders’ long cherished dream, which is coming true soon.

Vaishnav Graphics Digital Imaging
Holder of big machines portfolio

Prabhat Kumar
Extensive footprints of Vaishnav Graphics Digital Imaging can be traced all around Bihar and Jharkhand as the company is a widely acclaimed PSP and an authorised dealer of Apsom Infotex (a sole supplier of Roland and ColorJet printers in India). Incepted in the year 2007 as a mere acrylic sheet dealer, subsequent expansion in printing, dealership and client service of the company eventually gained them a new stature attaining a radical level of growth over the last few years. As on today, Vaishnav Graphics Digital Imaging boasts of being a PSP having one of the biggest machine portfolios in Patna.

“Constant update on machines is vital for every PSP longing to linger successful in the market,” says Prabhat Kumar, proprietor, Vaishnav Graphics Digital Imaging. Currently the production facility of Vaishnav Graphics Digital Imaging is equipped with a line of two ColorJet Neptunes (42 pico litre), ColorJet Neptune (35 pico litre), Roland VersaCAMM, Roland cutting plotter and a set of finishing equipments. A dedicated team of dozen experienced sign making professionals, who handle every assigned project under any given circumstance, is behind the brilliance in print outputs, installation and fabrication jobs of the company. Till date, Vaishnav Graphics Digital Imaging is known for a number of landmark projects carried out across all length and breadth of Bihar and Jharkhand, covering major cities across the states.

In the current client list of Vaishnav Graphics are some of the leading tyre majors, namely, Apollo, Bridgestone, Good Year, to name a few, and some big names in telecom and FMCG segments.

Citing as one of the landmark projects they have so far been accomplished, Prabhat points out an in-shop display project they did for TATA Indicom across three cities of Bihar and he identifies retail sector as a sunshine domain of growth for signage players. A team of around ten professionals, who are experts in their respective sign making professions, controls whole lot of the company’s activities.

What’s trending in the signage industry? There are certain spheres that Prabhat predicts them to be gaining growth in near future, which include cut letter signs and LED displays. However, he wisely preaches that sign makers who are engaging in these activities must play with a little bit of creativity. “In fact, router-cut signs, LED glow displays are more laborious and time consuming jobs, unlike the way of making flex boards or something related to that category,” explains Prabhat, conclusively adding that ‘creativity mixed with innovation’ is the key to this prerequisite.

When asked about the company’s secret mantra in delivering quality in outputs, he simply mentions that the right selection of printing media and technology serve the purpose. “We don’t choose any conventional media. Starflex is one such brand we always opt for standard graphics and the rest depends on customers’ demands,” he explains.

Landmark projects that have been accredited to be timeless impression of Ashra include the mass outdoor campaign of Idea they executed across Patna city. “It was when the cell-phone service giant hit the city for the first time. Ashra is now gearing up for some fresh development, which they zero in on adoption of a set of eco-solvent printers, in near future to meet the increasing demands of their customers.

DTP World
Planning for big way expansion

Arvind Kumar and Anil Kumar
The name reveals half the story of what DTP is all about. This print corner has been into desktop printing since its establishment in the year 1998. Blowing up along the changes in market trend from time to time, around five years back DTP started engaging in large-format printing with the adoption of a Gongzheng printer (with Nova printhead) from Mehta Cad Cam Systems. Arvind Kumar, proprietor, DTP still feels they need to take on further expansion towards newer printing domains. “I think the era has come for printing firms to adopt a complete range of machines that can fulfill whatever requirement of clients,” he explains, adding “Our main aim is to make ourselves a complete solution provider in near future.”

Xerox J75 press and a line of finishing equipments are well lined up in a separate division at DTP. This division is not totally truncated from the company’s signage production unit.

Those customers who come down to DTP’s lobby are impressed to find whole gamut of printing activities under one roof. “Our speciality in largeformat printing in combination with digital (commercial) jobs attracts customers,” says Anil Kumar, business head, DTP. He further mentions that the concept of onestop- shop has been bustling up rapidly in the printing industry and this is what DTP keeps looking ahead.

A staff of 30 employees maintains all activities at DTP right from frontdesk to machine operations, field jobs and other related tasks. In addition, a contractual third party team of 15 is always in active mode to provide helping hands to DTP, in case of handling big projects. DTP engages in outdoor displays, standies, interior decors and many others. The company has been working for only agencies till date but set to go for direct marketing soon in near future.

DTP’s plan for infrastructure expansion is towards adoption of high-end machines. In this respect, Arvind reveals that they are set to adopt latex technology along with CNC routing machines and laser engravers. “We don’t want to confine only around flex printing as the market is now changing rapidly towards high-end printing and innovative sign making,” he remarks with a vision of expandsion.

Art & Artist
All in arts of sign making

Munna
Munna is an artist known by one name, but customers who drop in at his signage shop located on Kamal Ashraf Lane in Patna lovingly address him ‘Munna Artist’. Munna started his career as an artist, painting ads, hoardings, store-front displays for local customers in and around Patna. Ever since its inception in the year 1989, Art & Artist keeps transforming from one stage to another, upgrading from manual brush work activities of painting signage to digital (large-format) printing. A big turn took place in the company’s overall activities in the year 2008. It was when they adopted a Nutek Prime printer to engage in flex printing (digitally), putting the company’s traditional manual job a bit on sideway.

“Today, we have two Caldron CJ printers (with XAAR and Seiko printheads) and managing everything to the best of our clients’ satisfactory levels,” mentions Munna adding that they will keep updating the infrastructure as per the demand from their customers as well as the trends picking up in the market. Some of the major and regular clients of Art & Artist in their current roaster include a list of reputed ice cream firms, like Wayss, Vanilla, Treat, among others.

It must be the case of the proverbial saying ‘Old habits die hard’ for Munna; when enquired him about his current affection to hand painting job, he flashes his eyes to say, “Of course, that’s very much a part of my life,” pointing to his business card where mentioned ‘wall painting’ clearly. He humbly remarks that hand-painting jobs at Art & Artist is still alive as some old customers of the company once in a while demand it in order to carve a difference amid conventional ways.

Munna Artist is, in fact, a man having possessed a split profession dividing between the traditional and modern technique. Today, he is guiding a team of 12 sign making professionals who are now gearing up to take on new paradigm shift. In this respect, Munna reveals that their infrastructure will be updated to a new grade soon by adding an eco-solvent printer in the portfolio, with which they hopefully grab some fresh projects from corporate biggies.

Grand Graphics
Ready to be on multiple roads

Md Shabbar
Painter-turned signage professionals are not uncommon among those being tapped on the radar of Sign & Graphics in ‘Region Exclusive’ tours. Grand Graphics is yet another company whose proprietor Md Razi Uddin was a popular painter in Patna and he was on the go with full of life in business around 45 years back. Changes through times in the signage industry take its share on Md Razi Uddin over the last few years as he recently changed its direction towards modern way of sign making and his son Md Shabbar Ali joined the business as a new kid in the venture.

“Ever since I joined my father, we have been looking at new verticals that can bring fresh novelties to the region’s signage market,” remarks Md Shabbar. He agrees to the fact that their foray into the use of digital sign making machines, such as cutting plotter, is quite new and at a very nascent stage. “But the need of the hour is the ‘creativity’ and ‘ideas’ to sprinkle some originality and innovation, which I think we have,” he mentions. Currently, Grand Graphics is a one-machine facility company (cutting plotter from Mehta Cad Cam), but they have been closely tied-up with some of the leading PSPs to outsource their print jobs.

However, by the time readers read this article, Grand Graphics must have installed a brand new printer in their production facility as Md Shabbar ordered for it two months back. That is just a beginning! Grand Graphics has a big vision ahead to adopt more for different applications, such as rigid material printing, tile graphics, glass works, among others. Job profile of the company exclusively includes cut-letter (glow sign) making which they have been doing for hotels, restaurants and others around the city.

Another big move that Grand Graphics keeps in pipeline is their penetration into tile printing. “I know it may take some time to absorb into this domain as it requires high-end machines. But it has been decided from our end to surely go for this new venture,” shares Md Shabbar referring Balajee Marble, a marble import firm run by a close friend of his, will be partner in the new initiative. One of the long-term plans of the company in pipeline is to draw chart for footprint expansion and strategy including opening of branches in some big cities beyond Patna.

“We are regular visitors to popular signage expos in India and abroad. This is how we keep checking the trends in terms of machines and technologies surfacing in the market,” says Ravi, elucidating that they are now ready to update their portfolio and looking for the right machines to be added. He further mentions that they will probably decide what has to be added to their infrastructure after visiting an expo in China soon.

Keeps taking on expansion paths

Dhananjay Kumar
Micro Graphics is one among those PSPs in Patna taking serious R&D on what customers want. Dhananjay Kumar, founder-partner of this signage firm, believes in understanding they can develop with their customers for sustainable business. “We do things a bit differently from what others do in the market. Our main motive is to deliver the right quality on right time,” he remarks. In this respect, Dhananjay says they foresee nothing but satisfactory nods of customers.

The current production facility of Micro Graphics is equipped with a couple of printers from VK Enterprises (E-Jet and Infiniti) and a laser engraver. “We manage everything with the existing machines, but we sense the need of a new machine as volume of demand in the market is seemed to be escalated soon in near future,” mentions Dhananjay, adding, “In our client list, some political parties occupy a permanent position and we work for them throughout the year, but in bulk during specific seasons.” BJP, RJD, LJP are some of the political groups for which Micro Graphics has been closely associated in preparation of signage and outdoor campaigns for years.

Apart from the political parties, Micro Graphics has a roster of multinational companies in their clientele. Central Mall, Big Bazaar, Tata Indicom, Airtel, Reliance Communications, Aircel and others are some of the major customers for them. A Micro Graphics team of 20 members has dedicatedly been working by maintaining strict deadlines to the utmost control of quality in both prints and services. “We don’t tie-up with any third party for installation and fabrication works, even when we handle projects outside Patna or Bihar, everything is maintained in-house,” says Dhananjay.

Main customers of Micro Graphics are based all across Bihar and Jharkhand. What is going to be new at Micro Graphics in near future? A new machine from VK Enterprises! “Yes, we are adopting another new six feet E-Jet printer from the company which we trust for their timely servicing and cordial support,” mentions Dhananjay. He asserts that the addition of the new quality printer is not merely a cyclic update to make their portfolio bigger but to boost the quality echelon in their print outputs in response to the demands of customers.

Color Park
Venturing for best quality

Rajeev Kumar
Who else would remain silent when opportunity knocks on the front door? This is how Color Park sparked in the first place when they found the umbilical cord connecting to the flamboyant signage market of the region. Rajeev Kumar, the main architect behind the creation of Color Park way back around two decades, is a man of vast experiences in the printing industry. After working at the processing department of Bhargava Bhusan Press in Varanasi, perhaps the largest Hindi dictionary publishers in Asia, Rajeev diagonally noticed the growth intensifying in the sign-making market around Uttar Pradesh and Bihar.

“Basically I was born and brought up in Dhanbad district of Bihar. It was my jijaji (brother-in-law) who guided me to start business in Patna as market environment in state capitals is something advantageous over other cities or towns,” recollects Rajeev, adding, “It was in the year 2004 we invested in Spectra SkyWalker (supplied by Mehta Cad Cam Systems), followed by Allwyn printer (with Konica printheads), Gongzheng ecosolvent and rest is our plan to boost for the next level development of infrastructure.”

Rajeev defines Color Park as a corner where colours get combined. What he attempts to mention here is the way they do R&D for the best methodology and tactics to churn quality graphic prints. As on today, the company is now on a progression path heading towards delivering unique outputs and versatility in productions. In this respect, Rajeev feels that the completeness of varied machines and technologies in the company’s machine portfolio is vital. As of now, just a team of half dozen professionals is behind the overall activities at Color Park. And Rajeev is planning to enhance the size sooner than later with fresh recruitments.

Next machine to be added in the infrastructure of Color Park will be a Canon Oce large-format printer, which is designed for CAD/GIS jobs as well as others related to poster graphics and all in vivid inkjet texture. So far, Color Park is working for agencies based in different cities and towns of Bihar and Jharkhand. When inquired about the company’s strategy to go directly down the market to handle customers first hand, Rajeev mentions things will be nurtured step by step soon.

Where innovative creations cater

Lalan Kumar Dixit
After jangling sometime in different print segments in the market, Vaishnavi Creatives ticked the box of signage and display art business around six years back and rest remains escalating since then. Lalan Kumar Dixit, who is the big hand behind all that progression, remembers that did not properly stick to the signage domain in their first move. “Signage had been an extended activity on the sidelines of our commercial printing jobs,” he narrates, adding further, “In a reverse way, today we keep commercial printing on the sidelines of large-format graphic print.”

The large-format printing division of Vaishnavi Creatives is equipped with SkyWalker and Jaguar cutting plotter purchased from Mehta Cad Cam Systems. In addition, a separate commercial printing division of the company is where installed a Konica Minolta bizhub Press. The company’s versatility in machine portfolio helps them serve their customers in a wider prospect. “Now that the age of single technology print shop is almost over, PSPs are changing tracks towards one-stop solution strategies in which they are fully equipped with commercial, offset and flex printers, all together under one roof,” opines Lalan.

We were assigned to prepare around 500 totem signs to be flaunted all over the city. The project was challenging for the reason that we had to make everything ready, from printing to installation, within a limited period,” remembers Lalan.

Kalakar
Living heritance of signage art

Azam Khan
Soft spoken, cool and inviting Azam Khan, sitting at the tiny sign making shop in a bylane connected to bustling SP Verma Road, is all gestured of an artist. Of course, he is an artist, an applied artist, who applies his art in sign making. Products and services available in his signage shop called Kalakar are cited on a shopfront panel: flex print, vinyl plates, glow signs, steel letters, ACP letter boards. But the shop doesn’t have any machine room or production facility. Why? Azam Khan still believes in the old adage ‘Art for Art’s Sake’. He ties up with a league of PSPs, who have facilities well-equipped with high-end routing, engraving and printing machines, for all machinery works that Kalakar needs.

“We have been in signage business since last 25 years,” recalls Azam when enquired about the company’s establishment. Traces and tradition of hand painted signs and billboards might have disappeared through changes in time. But the talent of Azam is still remained a talk in town and Kalakar pulls a crowd of regular customers, among which some are big old corporate biggies like Scandisk, Lenovo, etc in the list. In addition, many local hospitals, educational institutes are also regulars to Kalakar for a range of signage items, such as modular displays, name plates, public utility (directional signs) systems, among others. Though popular of being a painter over the last two decades, recognition of Kalakar was dawned just around six years back when Azam started making cut letters and glow signs for multinational companies. Now, the next move of the company, which Azam calls it a long-term plan, will be adoption of some good quality routing and engraving machines for pulling all the company’s outsourced jobs down to in-house level. As part of the move, the company’s seven-member creative team will also be expanded with fresh recruits.
